Lion Dance Cafe
Where we've featured it
“We’ve been eating a lot of sandwiches this year - so consider it high praise when I say that the shaobing sandwich from this vegan Singaporean spot easily makes my top three. What goes in the sandwiches change weekly, but the one I ordered was stuffed with thick slices of hoisin-braised tofu, garlic charred cabbage, fermented chilies, mint, and cilantro - and it was packed with flavor and texture. But what really makes the sandwich special is the shaobing, a nutty, sesame-covered flatbread with a chewy inside and a golden-brown, crusty exterior. Getting the sandwich takes a bit of planning, though - Lion Dance Cafe is only taking orders starting on Wednesdays at noon for pick-up on Friday and Saturday.” - JC
The popular vegan pop-up has finally landed a brick-and-mortar spot in Downtown Oakland. On Fridays and Saturdays, they’ll serve a small menu of plant-based Singaporean and Chinese dishes, and, of course, their shaobing sandwich. What goes in it rotates every week, but expect things like grilled seitan with spicy tomato and ginger relish, or hoisin braised tofu with garlicky cabbage. You can place an order here on Wednesdays at noon for pick-up on Friday or Saturday.
