Some things always make you happy. ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac is always the song you want to hear, if Almost Famous is on TV you’re definitely watching the rest of it, and adding avocado makes everything better. And a meal at Cotogna will always be a great experience.

The upscale but not stuffy Italian spot in the Financial District is the kind of place that’s perfect for almost any occasion, and you will never leave disappointed by the food. The house-made pastas are some of the best in the city, and the apps, sides, and pizzas are mostly traditional and also extremely good. All the ingredients, from the cheeses to the vegetables, are top-notch, and it seems like the people making the food care about how things taste, not just how they’ll photograph. We generally tend to stick with the pizzas and pastas because they’re ideal to share and stand out more so than the entrees, and we always order the ricotta or burrata to start.

The corner spot is just one high ceilinged room, with a long bar at the far side that makes for a strong solo dinner option. Behind the bar is a wood-fired oven that, in addition to cooking the excellent pizzas, gives the room a nice, cozy warmth. The service is efficient - sometimes to the point of making you feel bit rushed as they try to turn tables - but generally very friendly and on-point with menu suggestions and recommendations. The crowd tends to be a bit older due to the location, slightly higher price, and refined setting - but they’re adults revelling in the pasta glory, glad they have Cotogna to rely on for a dinner that will never let them down.

Food Rundown

Ricotta Della Casa

A toasty pot of melted ricotta with bread. Great way to prep for eating pizza and pasta.

Brussels Sprouts Au Gratin

Breadcrumbs plus creamy cheese sauce plus perfectly roasted brussel sprouts equals joy. Don’t worry about it, we’re just great at math.

Salsiccia, Burrata & Broccolini Pizza

Lots of cheese, lots of broccolini, and a nice fennel sausage. The crust isn’t quite perfect, but overall this is a strong pizza. You won’t be upset with any of the wood-fired choices here.

Tagliatelle Bolognese

Very meaty and highly delicious. The pasta is nicely al dente and a really good texture. Win.

Corn Triangoli

This is a summer thing, and it’s one of the best pastas around. Little triangle-shaped pasta filled with sweet corn puree that will blow your mind. Definitely order it if you have the option.

There’s always a gelato on the menu, and it’s always a good choice. We recently had the coffee and it was fantastic.
