B. Patisserie

Written by

Another tasty bakery. We’re so spoiled.

Quality scones. Colorful macarons. A chocolate-banana-almond croissant. Are you surprised another one has come to San Francisco? No. Are you happy? If not, god help you.

But it’s time to lay the truth on the table: B. Patisserie is basically Tartine Bakery II. If Hollywood needed to put out a cash-grab sequel to the groundbreaking original, this would be it. It’s almost as good, but in a fancier neighborhood, with a higher budget, and maybe a little less soul. But you’ll still go eat it up, just like you saw Iron Man 2 with the rest of us sheeple.

So can a bakery be good, even if it’s not original? ABSOLUTELY. How long do you think pastry chefs have been perfecting croissants? Decades, if not centuries. Let’s judge the level of perfection here, not the level of novelty.

In that regard, B. Pat excels. Most items you sample here — whether tarts, tartines, cakes, cookies, or bostocks — will be near the peak of the form. They do suffer from the “pastry case problem,” or the fact that a croissant fresh out of the oven at Starbucks is better than one that’s been sitting behind glass for three hours at a fine patisserie, but they’re still pretty excellent.

The house sandwiches, i.e. meat on quality bread, are as good as you might expect, given you like bread, and don’t care much about the temperature of your meat. We’re more partial to warmed-up proteins, but that may be personal preference.

Final take on B. Patisserie? Same as at the outset: another tasty bakery. We’re so spoiled.

Food Rundown

Kouign Amann

If you haven’t had one of these before, a must-order. We’re partial to those with fruit jam and nuts embedded.

Choc-Banana-Almond Croissant

I mean, it’s f*cking great. How could it not be?

Almond Cake

As per usual, we would love if the “moist” dial was turned up to 11. It’s at about an 8 here.

Chocolate Chip Cookie

And we would love if the “soft” dial was turned up to 11. It’s at about an 8 here.

Turkey Lyonnaise Tartine

It’s like a turkey-bacon-salad on top of a piece of bread. Come hungry, leave happy. In all seriousness, this is delicious and you should get it.

As tasty as their colors might indicate. Only available on weekends, so... come when you would normally come, and they’ll be available.
