On Tuesday, March 16th, eight people were killed in a series of mass shootings at three massage parlors in Atlanta. Six of those people were Asian women. The shooting in Atlanta is the latest instance of hate crimes and violence against Asian communities, which have been spiking across the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
Earlier in February, 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee was attacked and killed in SF. And in Oakland Chinatown, a 91-year-old man was viciously shoved to the ground. On the subway in Manhattan, 61-year-old Noel Quintana was randomly slashed in the face with a razor while on his way to work. And earlier this week, 59-year-old Danilo Yuchang and 75-year-old Xiao Zhen Xie were both attacked, in separate incidents, on Market Street in SF. (You can donate to Xie’s GoFundMe here). Reports have found that anti-Asian hate crimes have increased 1,900% since March 2020 - and in Oakland Chinatown, over the past three months, crime has increased by 25%.
