Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte

Noah Devereaux

Tourists come to Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte because they’ve heard about the original in Paris. But you’re here so that you can eat two helpings of stunning red meat and french fries. This is easily achievable, seeing as there’s only one thing on the menu - a $31.95 prix fixe dinner with a green salad and two consecutive servings of steak frites. So the only question you’ll be asked by the all-female wait staff (chalk this up to to sexist monarchical tradition) is “How would you like your steak, madame?”

Half of the people in here probably just got off a double-decker sightseeing bus, but L’Entrecôte’s charm actually lies in its outdated clunkiness. That and the undeniably delicious steak. Each ribeye (in French, “entrecôte”) comes with a buttery chicken liver sauce, which you’ll want to dip all of your crispy fries into. If you work in Midtown East, you hate decisions, or you order steak frites every time you see it on a menu, L’Entrecôte might be your personal heaven.

Green Salad With Walnuts

Eating this salad is kind of like watching a family-friendly animated movie trailer before an action film. It’s nice and all, but you’re really thinking about what’s to come.

Steak Frites

There’s a lot of mysticism surrounding the incredibly rich chicken liver-based sauce on the steak frites. It’s not a secret - you can find the recipe online, and it involves shallots, mustard, and lots of butter. Between this sauce, the crispy thin frites, and the double helping of perfectly cooked ribeye, you’ll be happier than a real pig in a real blanket. (They never get to do that.)

There are a surprising amount of desserts available at L’Entrecôte, ranging from mango sorbet and semi freddo to strudel and crème brûlée. We like the profiteroles covered in warm gooey chocolate best.
