Going to Guan Fu in Flushing is about as luxurious as a la carte dining in NYC gets. You’ll sit at on a cushioned wooden bench that looks like it was intended for someone holding a scepter, and eat big plates of Szechuan food that you’ll want to share with your top ten favorite people on the planet.

All of the Szechuan dishes we’ve ordered from the menu are worthy of recommendation, but the standouts include delicately fried green beans, a flaky, white fish boiled in pickled cabbage stew, and the mapo tofu. If you haven’t had it before, Guan Fu’s mapo tofu will raise your standards for mapo tofu in NYC. You’ll taste just as much distinct spice from the dish’s chili oil as you will from the tingling Szechuan peppercorns. There’s not a ton of pork visually present, but still enough meaty flavor to inspire an image of two happy pigs smoking cigars on a couple of lounge chairs. Fish around for the occasional salty explosion from fermented black beans, our our favorite aspect of the dish.

Guan Fu is open for takeout, limited indoor dining, and outdoor service in a covered area on the first floor of Flushing’s One Fulton Square. Bring your family or someone you’re trying to impress in the form of Szechuan peppercorn and a formal-but-not-stiff restaurant space.
