B&H Dairy is the kind of place you go if you want to feel like a New Yorker. Not a lived-here-for-three-years New Yorker, but a guy reading a newspaper in a diner in an ’80s cop movie New Yorker. Sit at the one long counter and order from the guy who makes your food. The breakfast and lunch menus are extensive, but you can’t go wrong with one of the soups or giant sandwiches. Feel free to bring your own newspaper and tattered hat.

Málà Project is a great Chinese restaurant in the East Village that specializes in dry pot.
Here’s the good news: If you like the idea of eating various pig parts in some sort of spicy chili sauce, you’re going to love this joint. Jeepney is Maharlika’s second East Village restaurant, and this one is a take on a Filipino gastropub.
The Smith is a chain restaurant that started in the East Village, and it’s sort of like a mid-tier sedan. Not too flashy, but it gets the job done.
