Guisados might be a full-on chain at this point, but it’s still home to the best tacos in Echo Park. This order-at-the-counter spot is quick and affordable, with a nice back patio if you have a few minutes to sit. Get the taco sampler - six mini tacos for $7.50. Just make sure the mole poblano, the chicken tinga, and camarones make the cut.
Guisados has reopened all of their locations, including the Echo Park outpost, with its back patio in the hills of Chavez Ravine. All the tacos are $3.50 or less, so you can really go crazy here and try a bunch of different stuff. Our favorites are the chicharrón - pork skin simmered in salsa verde - and the super-spicy chiles toreados, with four kinds of hot peppers.
You learn quickly in LA that Mexican food and tacos are almost two entirely different things, with entirely different scenes. And while there’s a pantheon of elite taco spots throughout LA, Guisados is our first move. With about 14 different kinds of tacos on the menu, there isn’t one you shouldn’t order. And that’s why you get the sampler platter. Six tacos of your choosing, $6.99 out of your wallet. Life is good. The taco behemoth is expanding rapidly, with locations stretching all the way from Boyle Heights to West Hollywood. Even better news for you and your uncontrollable taco urges.
Have you heard? LA is a taco town. And even better news for you, tacos are cheap. We could tell you to go to about 127 taco spots - but we’ll tell you to go to Guisado’s first. These are the gold standard, and if you go to USC you don’t even have to go too far to get them (the original location is in Boyle Heights, but there’s a second in Silver Lake).
If we had to dream up an LA taco place, we would probably get lazy and just point you to the Echo Park Guisados. A small space with a constant (but fast-moving) line, a shaded patio to sit on, and truly fantastic mole poblano tacos, our only real issue with Guisados is that it’s also BYOB. Give us a six-pack and a bunch of tacos, and there’s a not-small chance that we won’t be at the game until the fourth inning.
When you get a craving for tacos, there’s very little that will stop you. Hopefully, you’re in Echo Park when it hits, so you can head right over to Guisados. This classic taco spot has expanded rapidly over the city in the last few years, but its Echo Park location remains as good as it’s always been. We still can’t ever decide which tacos we actually want here, so the move is definitely the platter. Six mini tacos of your choosing for $7 - easily the best lunch deal in the area.
