Living in Los Angeles means constantly hearing references to Old Hollywood. But unless you live in one of those bungalows that used to be a dressing room for silent movie stars, there aren’t many times you can actually feel like you’re in Old Hollywood. Enter: The Sidecar. This well-balanced classic cocktail is made with cognac, orange liqueur, and lemon juice, and it’s been an LA staple since the days of Clark Gable and Bette Davis. So here are nine great spots in LA where you can get one tonight.

THE SPOTS

Big Bar

$$$$
$$$$ 1927 Hillhurst Ave

Big Bar, attached to Alcove on Hillhurst, makes a version of the Sidecar with strawberry brandy. The fruity addition makes it ideal for sipping on their shady Los Feliz patio, or, you know, on your four-by-four-foot balcony if you order one to-go.

Guerrilla Tacos

$$$$
$$$$ 2000 E 7th St

We love Guerrilla Tacos for their fancy takes on tacos, like shrimp chorizo with cabbage escabeche, pork belly with heirloom tomatoes, and sweet potato with almond chile and feta. They’re also serving frozen Sidecars, which should be extremely high on your list of things to drink before summer ends.

Elephante

$$$$
$$$$ 1332 2nd St

Elephante has one of the best ocean views in Santa Monica, so this rooftop spot is a great bet if you want to sip cocktails and look at the Pacific on the Westside. They’ve also got some surprisingly good pizzas, too.

Melrose Umbrella Co

$$$$ 7465 Melrose Ave

You probably know that Melrose Umbrella Company serves some of the best - and most original - cocktails in Weho. But they do the classics well, too, including martinis, Old Fashioneds, and Sidecars. Whatever you get will go great with some from their new food menu, which includes a burger, a grilled cheese and tomato soup combo, and some tacos.

Olivetta

$$$$ 9010 Melrose Ave

Olivetta opened on Melrose shortly before COVID hit, and recently relocated for poolside dining at the West Hollywood Kimpton. This Italian spot has some great handmade pasta, especially the radiatori with lamb Bolognese lobster spaghetti, and solid cocktails. And do not, under any circumstances, skip the house-baked sourdough.

Thunderbolt

$$$$
Bar FoodBar  in  Echo Park
$$$$ 1263 W Temple St

Historic Filipinotown’s cocktail bar Thunderbolt is open for takeout and delivery, with a variety of fantastic cocktails and a rotating selection of food like chess pie, Sunday fried chicken and biscuits, and more.

Here And Now

$$$$ 300 S Santa Fe Ave Ste N

Downtown LA’s cocktail spot Here & Now recently opened a back patio with covered seating and live music on weekends. They also have been serving to-go cocktails since March, so whether you’re in person or ordering to-go, you’ll get some bar snacks and a whole bunch of great drinks.

Seventy7 Lounge

$$$$ 3843 Main St

Culver City bar Seventy7 Lounge has a wide selection of cocktails available to-go in juice pouches (along with some very fun-looking alcoholic freeze pops). If you’re dining-in, they’ve also got bar food from next-door Rocco’s Tavern.

Black Market Liquor Bar

$$$$
$$$$ 11915 Ventura Blvd

Black Market Liquor Bar’s menu is all over the place, and we mean that in the best possible way. Because whether you’re on their patio or in your living room, you’ll be able to eat lobster rolls, chicken bao with pickled mushrooms, and sweet corn and chicken ravioli all in the same meals.
