Most weekends, you wake up early and trek across the city just to spend some time with a contender, but you leave feeling unsatisfied. You cross that place off your list and, the next week, you try again with somewhere new.
But just because the “perfect” brunch might only exist in Sex and the City reruns, there are a few places in the city that come pretty close. These are our all-time favorite Los Angeles brunch restaurants, and while you’ll have to deal with a line at some of them, they’re all worth the wait. This isn’t a list for the times when you’re hungover and need food in your face ASAP - this is a list for the times when you want nothing less than the best. Attention: The best restaurant in Los Angeles does a weekend brunch, and it will ruin just about every other brunch for you. This obviously isn’t your walk-in-hungover and lie down in your booth kind of spot. Plan ahead and make a reservation, and get ready for the brunch of your meat-filled dreams. The menu is largely made up of the items you love from dinner like the oxtail poutine along with brunch-specific dishes like a pastrami reuben benedict.
Salazar’s outdoor space is incredible at night, and it’s every bit as good - if not better - during their brunch, which happens to run every day of the week. Order the chilaquiles and the fantastic chorizo plate, and suck down several life-saving horchatas while contemplating why you took that shot of Wild Turkey in the Uber last night. If it’s their tacos you’re craving, their regular menu is available nearly in its entirety as well. And no one should be passing up those housemade tortillas.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say Republique is the most popular kid in the LA brunch class right now, and not just because Sundays regularly involve a hundred-person line out front. Once you make it through that test, you’ll be greeted with a long list of options that includes shakshouka, kimchi fried rice, and something called a “Sticky Bomb” (it involves bomboloni, bourbon, bacon, and maple syrup). You’ll never hesitate about that line again.
Jon & Vinny’s food alone makes this one of the best brunches in LA, but the fact that you can still walk into this casual Fairfax Italian joint on a weekend afternoon and find a table in under 20 minutes is a beautiful mystery we frankly don’t deserve. You’re going to order your favorites like the burrata-covered LA Woman pizza, because you’re emotionally obligated to, but throwing in the fried eggs and breakfast BLT is also mandatory. Italian brunch is the best kind of brunch.
Brunch at Sqirl is never going to be a laid-back boozing kind of meal. You’re going to stand in a line that wraps around the block, then challenge someone to a duel for a table, and you will not be getting any alcohol for your troubles. But you’ll keep coming back to Sqirl because this is some of the most interesting brunch food you can get in LA. Yes, there’s the pesto bowl and the ricotta toast that will get cold as the table figures out how to use portrait mode on their phones. But there are also cactus flour pancakes, multiple types of rice porridge, and something called green eggs and jam. This is brunch that is almost always worth the trouble.
L&E is an ideal spot for dinner - the food is great, the atmosphere is laid-back but intimate, and the crowd is there to have a good time. The same applies to their brunch. L&E is never trying too hard to be trendy, and the crowd is mostly made up of locals nursing hangovers with oysters and Moroccan-spiced eggs. We know. We just have to mention the made-up word “Gjelina” and your eyes will begin to roll. But there’s a reason this all-day restaurant has a constant crowd waiting outside of it. Unless you go when it opens at 8am, you’ll likely be one of those people waiting, but a daytime spot out on the patio and a plate of the crispy eggs with proscuitto can make up for a lot. The menu is also enormous, with everything from eggs, to salads, to pizzas, to a lamb burger. Have brunch here and you’ll understand quickly why Venice people never leave Venice.
Salt’s Cure is an all-around very solid restaurant, but this Hollywood standby’s brunch situation is on a very different level. While pretty much anything you order is going to be good, every brunch at Salt’s Cure starts and ends with the oatmeal griddle cakes. They’re essentially pancakes, except better - and once you’ve tried them, all other pancakes feel like rip-offs. This place still gets very crowded, so reservations are definitely recommended.
After drinking so many bloody marys that you need a nap and eating more pieces of bacon than is medically advisable, brunch has a habit of taking up most of your day. At Superba though, brunch doesn’t need to become a production. The space is huge, so you rarely have to wait long for a table, and it has that I’m-in-no-rush feeling that Venice does particularly well. The menu is full of classics with a twist, like the excellent marbled eggs, or the breakfast sandwich with kale and spicy Italian sausage. You’ll also want to get a big plate of pastries to share, and maybe one of the fried chicken sandwiches too. Ok, so you might still need that nap.
You know Milo & Olive as the place where you’ve ended a bad day with excellent pizza and a glass of red wine. But had you started your day with one of their breakfast pizzas, perhaps it would have turned out better. Brunch at Milo & Olive means eating a lot of very good food that you won’t get at other brunch places (think poached eggs with creamy polenta, or a fancy brioche breakfast sandwich), and drinking lots of mimosas and lavender sangria. The space is bright and welcoming, too - it works to bring your parents for a fancy breakfast, but you can also come here in sweats.
For those mornings when you want to shove cheese into your mouth without attracting stares, there is Homestate. For those mornings when you don’t want to even look at an eggs benedict, there is Homestate. We could go on, but we’ll just say - there are a lot of mornings where Homestate, Los Feliz’s Tex-Mex breakfast/lunch spot, will provide exactly what you need. Their migas and breakfast tacos are the best in the city, and since this is not exactly a secret, the small space gets very crowded on weekends. If you don’t want to wait (or show up early to grab one of their outdoor tables), you can always order for pickup. There are mornings when you need to eat tacos in your car, too.
The brunch date is something that should happen more often. It can be a quick eggs and coffee meal if you’re not sure how this is going to go, or an all-day mimosa fest if you know how you want this to go And when the latter is the case, there’s no better place than A.O.C. Get a table on the patio and some of those aforementioned mimosas before diving into the menu of classics-turned-fancy. If you’re looking for a grown-up brunch, this is your place.
Driving down to Manhattan Beach for brunch at M.B. Post used to be an hours-long ordeal - and not just because of the traffic. But even as the crowds have died down in recent years, the bacon cheddar biscuits continue to provide us with all the motivation we need to tackle the freeway on a Saturday morning. The ricotta stuffed French toast, the sticky bun, and the benedict that comes on top of those biscuits help too.
Sometimes, the best things in life don’t look like the best things. Like the coat you found at a thrift store that makes you look like you work at a bookstore in Paris, or the date that starts off with them spilling wine all over you, but ends with swapping childhood stories while staring at the ocean on an empty beach. Also in this category: Millie’s. This small breakfast spot looks like your average cafe, but the food is seriously good - especially the Devil’s Mess, a giant plate of spicy eggs and potatoes. When you’re at Millie’s, you feel like you’re where you need to be. Until you finish the Devil’s Mess, and then you need to go lie down.
