Black Penny’s special because it’s one of the few places in central London to meet friends for brunch or a lazy afternoon coffee that feels genuinely authentic and cosy. There are scuffed tables and a library of books that give it a properly homely feel, and everything on their extensive brunch menu is very good. The French toast with rhubarb is very tasty, and their home-made baked beans are a good call as well. There’s usually a bit of a wait, but it’s actually worth the effort. Bear in mind that it closes between 5-6pm most days, so keep it for daytime catchups.
