Having said that, Social Eating House is excellent for fine dining-style food in relaxed surroundings. What arrives on the plate might look more like visual art than something to eat, but once you pop it in your mouth, you’ll be happy.

Ikoyi is a casual fine dining restaurant in St James Market serving a Modern European take on West African cuisine.
The bao are what makes this Taiwanese joint legendary, but the small plates are even better. The queues at Bao are an official Soho landmark.
There are proper waits for Kiln’s high-octane Thai dishes, but it’s absolutely worth the wait. Grab a seat at the bar, get the short-rib curry.

This restaurant in Covent Garden is the second location of The Frog, and the food is excellent.
The Canton Arms is a lovely gastropub in Lambeth that still feels like an old school boozer. Come for a drink and stay for a toastie, or more.
Blixen isn’t the best food in Spitalfields, but it’s where you go for a simple, crowd-pleasing group dinner or brunch.
