40 Maltby St
Where we've featured it
Few restaurants in London give lone diners the respect, the crumble-heavy desserts, and the table they deserve quite like 40 Maltby Street does. To the point that the always relaxed and always classy wine bar and small plates spot dedicated a table to solo diners. It’s cosy, it’s intimate and, yes, you’re surrounded by excellent wine.
An old, dimly lit Bermondsey railway arch may sound like John Luther’s idea of a good date, but it should really be yours. 40 Maltby Street is easily (and seemingly effortlessly), one of London’s most consistently lovely wine bars and restaurants. At the moment they’re doing a changing £40 set menu, with things like lobster and fennel rice or confit duck, plums and green beans.
On a sunny day you want to be up bright and early for two reasons. The first is carpe diem and all that stuff. The second is because 40 Maltby Street makes sandwiches that, in the words of the internet, are absolute units. These big boys fly off their proverbial shelves, whether filled with pumpkin fritters and roasted tomatoes, or homemade fish fingers and pickled cucumbers. You’re also a five or ten minute wander from the Thames, so there are nice seating spots aplenty.
40 Maltby Street is a superb restaurant and wine bar serving low-intervention wines from select makers around Europe, and you can get those wines delivered to your door from Gergovie Wines. For £9 (for up to 12 bottles), they’re aiming for overnight delivery to most addresses in the UK. Just make sure you get an order to them before dispatch days (Tuesday and Thursday). Get ordering.
Much of what comes out of 40 Maltby Street is talked about in hushed, excited whispers. Word of cauliflower croquettes being on the menu will spread across London’s burgeoning beige-obsessed community like a molten cheese wildfire. It’s no surprise then that their weekly changing sandwiches have the same effect. Below is a recent fried chicken and coleslaw number that could be yours if you go and collect.
Swing by the superb wine bar and restaurant next to Shad Thames to pick up bits like pork and fennel ragoût, watercress soup, braised cuttlefish, and pear sorbet. If they have any of their daily sandwiches left, you’ll want to get one of those as well. Their Insta has more details.
