Chances are you’ve spent a lot of time in coffee shops since you first started drinking the good stuff. Whether that was at the age of 14 when you downed your first Nescafé sachet to get you through a Harry Potter marathon, or 2020 when the whole world went to shit and you needed an excuse to go for a walk - the end result is a craving for coffee. Which by the way, is more than a drink. It’s a pastime. An activity. A way of life. And these 21 places all have some excellent coffee, and an outdoor set-up for you to drink it in the sun.

THE SPOTS

Giulia Verdinelli

Juliet’s Quality Foods

££££ 110 Mitcham Road

Home to a pistachio and yuzu icing cake we’re 100% obsessed with, this Tooting café is serving some of the best brunch in London. And it’s also serving coffee and some other bits, all of which you can enjoy in their sunny backyard terrazzo.

Vardo

££££
££££ 9 Duke Of York Square

This spacious all-day restaurant in Chelsea is serving coffee, brunch, and more tasty things on its outdoor set-up which - hello - includes a roof terrace. It’s the ideal place for a coffee catch-up in Chelsea, and the roof terrace has Big Summer Energy which will likely elevate any casual coffee date, literally.

Café Kitsuné

££££
££££ 19 Motcomb Street

On the ground floor of this huge five-storey Japanese and Nordic themed shopping and dining centre, you’ll find Café Kitsuné. A place where you can get things like Kinako Iced Lattes, egg sandos, and cute little animal shaped biscuits.

Giulia Verdinelli

Fare Bar and Canteen

££££
££££ 11 Old Street

Wine by night, pizza by day, and coffee at all times. No, that isn’t the tagline of our memoir, it’s what you can expect at Fare. This Old Street spot has some of the best coffee in the neighbourhood, and they also have a private patio out back where you can drink it.

If there’s something we love it’s an excellent bakery, and if there’s something we really love it’s this Wandsworth bakery with its new outdoor terrace. Picture coffee, doughnuts, and sunshine.

Milk

££££
££££ 20 Bedford Hill

Milk is a great café in Balham, and one of the best spots in South London to get brunch. Plus, it also happens to have a bunch of outdoor seating to go with it.

Karolina Wiercigroch

Caravan King's Cross

££££
££££ Granary Building, 1 Granary Sq

Not your typical mobile home, the King’s Cross branch of Caravan is enormous. It’s part restaurant, part bar, and part roastery. And they have a load of tables outside which are fully covered in case the weather decides to be British whilst you’re enjoying your coffee.

Kanenas Coffee London

££££ 65 The Grove

There aren’t many outdoor coffee shop set-ups that are as well prepared for British weather as Kanena’s Coffee in Ealing. Think benches and tables out front that are covered by what looks like a gazebo/mammoth umbrella, making it the perfect spot to head to when you want to stay 100% dry.

Greenberry Cafe

££££ 101 Regents Park Rd

Sometimes we wish we lived in Primrose Hill for the pastel-coloured houses. Other times we wish we lived there so that we could be within walking distance of this cute café which happens to have some outdoor tables that make it the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat.

Over Under Coffee

££££
££££ 181A Earls Court Road

Not only does this Australian cafe in Earl’s Court make some great coffee, and the kind of formidable pancakes that are so good they probably deserve their own star on a mythical pancake Walk of Fame, they’ve also got a heated outdoor terrace that you can book in advance, or equally, just turn up.

Giulia Verdinelli

Ozone Coffee Roasters

££££
££££ Emma Street

We don’t know if we can, in good conscience, send someone to Ozone Coffee Roasters and not tell them to get the eggs benedict on bubble ‘n’ squeak. So yes, head to this spot to drink some of the best coffee in London, but also, get some extremely tasty brunch too.

Apple Butter Cafe

££££ 32-34 Monmouth Street

Apple Butter Cafe is a Middle Eastern spot in Covent Garden serving specialty coffee, as well as aesthetically pleasing brunches, and they’ve got some outdoor tables on the cobbled street outfront which feels like you’re on holiday when it’s sunny.

Allpress Espresso Roastery & Cafe

££££
££££ 55 Dalston Ln

The Allpress roastery on Dalston Lane has an excellent, surprisingly secluded outdoor patio. It’s just about the best spot in E8 to sit with a coffee on a sunny morning.

Snackbar

££££
££££ 20 Dalston Lane

Temporarily closed for renovations. Reopening May.

This Dalston café is home to a kimchi and stichelton toastie that keeps us up at night wondering if we can ever go back to a regular toastie. It also has a new outdoor setup. And it’s the perfect place for a coffee and a snack with a friend.

Brickwood Coffee & Bread

££££
££££ 16 Clapham Common South Side

Do you like good coffee, freshly baked pastries, and outdoor seating? Of course you do, otherwise you’ve been reading the wrong guide. Now that we’ve checked that you do, this coffee shop opposite Clapham Common tube station has all three of those things.

Brickwood Coffee & Bread

££££ 11 Hildreth St

Brickwood’s other branch in Balham is also open for business with an outdoor seating area for coffee drinkers.

The Black Cab Coffee Co

££££
££££ 1 Riverlight Quay

This slick, ultra-modern café in Vauxhall has floor to ceiling windows, great coffee and an all-day breakfast menu. And the spacious outdoor seating means it’s a great spot for a relaxed coffee catch-up.

Flotsam & Jetsam

££££
££££ 4 Bellevue Parade

This cute neighbourhood café in Wandsworth has some bench seats out front which are great for drinking coffee and getting a bite to eat when the sun is out.

Antipode

££££
££££ 28 Fulham Palace Rd

You can get some excellent coffee from this little cafe in Hammersmith that you can enjoy in their outdoor seating setup. FYI there’s usually an exciting brunch special on the weekends.

Lowry & Baker

££££
££££ 339 Portobello Rd.

This popular neighbourhood café on Portobello Road is good for cute vintage crockery, delicious cakes, and drinking good coffee outside. But there are only a few tables, so you might have to settle for takeaway coffee on the weekends when it’s busy.

Hjem

££££
££££ 3 Launceston Place

If you’re after a seriously good cup of coffee in Kensington, this Danish café is open and serving it. It’s easy to mistake the bench out front as the only outdoor seating, but you should know that they also have a secret patio/courtyard garden at the back. And who doesn’t love a secret courtyard?
