Machine: Engineered Dining & Drink

1846 W Division St

Chicago, Illinois 60622

This Wicker Park spot just reopened their plant-filled sidewalk patio this week. If you’re familiar with Machine, you know this place is really into flowers (they have a flower shop inside their restaurant) and elaborate cocktails (the kind that comes with a sugar cage and tiny hammer). Along with a long drink menu, they also have small plates like smoked salmon spread and crispy chicken tacos.

“Engineered Dining” might bring to mind astronaut food or something out of a sci-fi movie, but that’s not what you’ll get at Machine. The impressive to-go menu features options like roasted salmon with romesco puree, and you can get a large-format cocktail kit to go with whatever your order.

This Wicker Park spot reopened their plant-filled sidewalk patio last month. So if you’re looking for a place to day-drink that feels like a secret garden, this is a good option.

If you want intricate, over-the-top cocktails, order from Machine. Their kits come with things like candy cages, little hammers (to break your caged drink out of cocktail jail), stemware, and all sorts of ingredients. And each kit makes about 12-16 cocktails.

The owners of Machine coordinate a hospitality meal program, giving out over 200 dinners to restaurant workers in need. They also donate and deliver meals to local hospitals for healthcare workers, as well as flower giveaways outside the restaurant.

Movie Pairing: Tank Girl (Netflix)

Tank Girl combines two of my favorite movie things: a post-apocalyptic wasteland and awesome futuristic hair. And while Mad Max is the dystopian GOAT, during this current situation I’ll take brightly colored ass-kickings delivered by Lori Petty over the grim brooding of Furiosa anytime. Basically, it’s the feel-good post-apocalyptic movie you didn’t know you needed. And nothing goes better with the fun, ridiculous tone of this film than one of the slightly-silly cocktails from Machine (they come with candy cages and a little hammer), and pairing it with a giant bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.” -AK

Along with a long drink menu, they also serve small plates like smoked salmon spread and crispy chicken tacos, and entrees like braised short rib. And they also have a nice plant-filled sidewalk patio that feels a little secret garden-y.

The Deal: 1/2 Priced Bottles of Wine & Select Cocktails

Despite the name, Machine Engineered Dining & Drink isn’t known for heavy metal music and industrial decor. Instead, thanks to the attached flower shop, Machine’s known for having beautiful floral arrangements and equally pretty cocktails. And during the week you can try a couple discounted drinks, and split (or not split) a bottle of 1/2 priced wine with a friend.

This Wicker Park spot recently reopened their plant-filled sidewalk patio. If you’re familiar with Machine, you know this place is really into flowers (they have a flower shop inside their restaurant) and elaborate cocktails (the kind that comes with a sugar cage and tiny hammer). Alongside their big drink menu, they also have brunch plates like graham cracker-crusted french toast with banana jam and lime fluff, truffled mushroom omelettes, and beef and potato hash. Which does not, to our knowledge, come in a sugar cage.
