Steakhouses are an essential part of life in Chicago. We have approximately one million of them, they’re usually the first places we take visitors, and they’re the go-to restaurants for any kind of major celebration. And inside every person living here is the fundamental idea of what defines a classic Chicago steakhouse - usually a downtown address, giant booths, an entire menu section devoted just to potatoes, and (obviously) a lot of beef.
Given our current situation, this important part of our lives is out of reach. But not completely - there are still a lot of steakhouses open for takeout and delivery. Here are 18 spots to turn your house into a Chicago steakhome.
When we’re asked to suggest a Chicago steakhouse, our first answer is always Bavette’s. The food is consistently fantastic (both the steak and non-steak), but the biggest issue with this spot is trying to get a table. Now though, it’s available for carryout and delivery, and since you have a standing reservation at your house, you can eat Bavette’s whenever you want. Also important: you can get their delicious sourdough bread delivered, too.
Have you ever been at a fancy steakhouse and thought, “Sure, this is delicious… but I probably could have made this steak at home”? Well, now you can find out if that’s true. RPM is selling raw steaks, along with a selection of sides like roasted broccoli and whipped potatoes. And deep down you know you’d f*ck those up.
The same thing we said about RPM can be applied to Gibsons. And while you won’t be able to dine-in and be charmed by the wall of ’80s and ’90s celebrity headshots, at least you can have the steaks delivered cooked or raw. Also worth noting, the rest of the menu is available too - including the huge desserts which might need to travel separately in an Uber XL.
This Italian restaurant has the exact same steak deal as the original Gibsons. So, if you want to eat some steak, but also need a big bowl of rigatoni, order from here.
OK, we’re rounding out the Gibsons trifecta. Since Hugo’s shares a kitchen with Gibsons, it’s not surprising that they have the same carryout and delivery deals - including all of their steaks, which are available cooked or pre-packaged to cook at home. Why would you order from Hugo’s and not its sister restaurant? Because you like their logo better, that’s why.
Two things that have always made Tango Sur stand out are its BYOB policy and its affordable steak (when compared to other quality steakhouses). Now, every dinner we have is technically BYOB, but you can take advantage of this place’s reasonably priced cuts of meat. Its full menu is available for takeout and delivery.
This wine bar is right next to Tango Sur, owned by the same people, and is a convenient spot to grab some light bites and a bottle before heading next door for dinner. But Bodega Sur is also open for both delivery and carryout, and has multiple steak options - like filet, rib eye, top sirloin, and skirt steak. There’s also the Tabla Gaucha Dinner, which includes an assortment of grilled meats.
We like the steak at Joe’s just as much as we like the stone crab that made it famous. And we especially appreciate its impressive potato selection - particularly the buttery hash browns. Right now you can order their full menu or family-style specials for takeout and delivery, and bottles of wine for 50% off. Don’t forget to get some key lime pie, too.
Maple & Ash is one of Chicago’s most grandiose steakhouses. It’s known for plush velvet booths, giant candelabras on every table, ornate chandeliers, and an expensive tasting menu called “I Don’t Give A Fck.” Well, now we all need to stay the fck home, but you can still eat a fancy steakhouse meal. They’re offering their full menu for carryout and delivery (including all their caviar and fire-roasted seafood), and they have family-style specials available.
This is actually Chicago’s oldest steakhouse - it opened in 1941 - which means it’s seen some stuff. Therefore, it’s not too surprising that Gene and Georgetti is taking the current situation in stride, and pivoting to take out and delivery. They’re offering family-style meals, but you can also order from their regular menu - which includes all their steaks and chops.
The meat at El Che is fantastic, and this West Loop steakhouse is offering uncooked steaks for pickup. Just keep in mind that all orders must be placed ahead of time, and you need to keep an eye on their website and Instagram if you want to place an order. Basically, they’re one step away from asking for you to send a fax, but whatever - the food is good.
Only in Chicago can you consider getting a steak “flight” delivered to your home. Artango has a three-course meal that includes a flight of sirloin, NY strip, and ribeye - along with empanadas, potatoes, and flan. They also have their flank steak, filet mignon, and ribeye available a la carte, but that just doesn’t sound as fun.
Is this a chain? Yes. But these are unusual times that make you overlook any reservations you might have in order to turn your three-story walkup into an Brazilian meat emporium. And this place actually has a lot of meat - they have ready-to-grill cuts, churrasco combos, ribeye, and filet mignon entrees. They even have eight different butcher shop cuts, and you can also get fresh produce and wine.
We usually only go to this River North chain restaurant for their butter cake. But now you can basically use this place like a butcher shop - they’re offering a menu of raw steaks to cook at home, and you can buy individual cuts or buy a multipack, including the wagyu tomahawk. You can also get steak kits that include meat, caesar salad, two sides, and (thankfully) butter cake.
Tortoise Supper Club is offering a steak dinner for two. It includes a caesar salad, two eight-ounce filets with port black truffle sauce, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. You can also add on a slice of Tortoise pie and a bottle of wine. It basically sounds like the kind of dinner you cook yourself to impress someone, but this way your smoke alarm won’t go off. Unless you try to create “ambiance” by lighting all those cinnamon spice Yankee candles.
This Japanese spot has two wagyu options, along with a ribeye and NY strip. They also have a family-meal option that includes steak, wagyu beef dumplings, spicy tuna maki, and potatoes for $29 per person. Plus, you can add a bottle of sake to your order for 20% off.
Kinzie Chophouse has about 5,692 cuts of steak available, from a six-ounce filet to a 36-ounce dry-aged tomahawk. You can order for pickup and delivery.
Lawry’s has a lot going and is open for curbside takeout and delivery. You can get prime rib a la carte, or as part of the family-style prime rib diners. They also have take-and-bake sides, cocktail kits, beer, and bottles of wine for 25-50% off. And if you decide to do pickup, you get a 20% discount.
This Latin American restaurant is offering a steak-centric, family-style meal for four people. It includes entraña (skirt steak), roasted potatoes, beet salad, and lentils. The entraña is also available a la carte in case your “family” is your sole surviving houseplant.
