Gene’s is small Downtown counter-service spot that’s only open for lunch, only takes cash, and is hot as hell in the summer. But don’t worry about all that, because it’s also home to some of the best Chinese noodles in Boston. The #4 hand-pulled noodle is what you need to start with here - a thick, nicely chewy noodle dish topped with peppery, garlicky sauce that you’ll be trying (and failing) to scoop up with your fork when the noodles are gone. The flatbread sandwiches filled with pork are very good, too, but they’re also very oily, and it’s the noodles that will be the reason you end up craving this place.
